Sanitation and Hygiene

Sanitation and hygiene play a crucial role in safeguarding public health, preventing the spread of diseases and improving the overall well being and quality of life of individuals and communities.

Realizing this fact, Humanitarians, a group of retired school classmates, felt the urge to work towards improved sanitary hygiene practices and decided to get associated with Seva Sahayog Foundation in 2021, to volunteer in the Environment vertical to work in the area of Sanitation and Hygiene.

In 2023, the initiative has taken a Quantum Jump due to two critical factors.

  1. Addition of team members with construction expertise.
  2. Active participation of local Government bodies.

Objectives

  • To improve sanitation and hygienic conditions for the students, mainly for girls, in rural areas.
  • To provide a proper infrastructure toilet to the needy schools within the Pune District.
  • In association with the Zillah Parishad and Gram panchayat, to facilitate provision of a Sanitary Pads Vending Machine.
  • To facilitate a Sanitary Napkin Incinerator Machine.
  • To facilitate counseling and training for proper maintenance of the facilities.

Impact

This initiative has positively impacted the attendance and health of the students.
students are not preoccupied with discomfort or the fear of unsanitary conditions, so they are more likely to engage in learning activities, ultimately which has created a positive learning environment. Till now 1705 students have benefited through this initiative.

In 2023-2024, The project has enhanced public health and prevented disease spread in rural Pune District schools by installing 12 toilets and 7 urinals, along with sanitary napkin incinerator machines. It has also provided counselling and training for proper facility maintenance, benefiting over 300 students across 3 schools. The improvements have increased student attendance and better health by addressing discomfort and unsanitary conditions, thereby creating a more positive and conducive learning environment.
