One Arrow, One Dream: How Prajwal Mindhe Shot His Way From Failure to Gold

The first time Prajwal Balu Mindhe stepped up to compete, he lost.

Not a close loss he could shrug off, the kind that makes you question whether you’re cut out for this at all. For many, that would’ve been the end of the story.

Before the Bow

Three years ago, Prajwal walked into the Sanjay Hegde Sports Academy, run by Seva Sahayog Foundation, and picked archery mostly because it felt different from anything else on offer.

He didn’t touch a bow on day one. Or for a while after that.

What came first was string practice, thera-band exercises, pulling drills, warm-ups built purely to grow stamina. Strength first. Discipline first. The equipment came later, only once a student had proven they could show up, consistently, and put in the unglamorous work.

The Failure That Became a Mirror

So, when Prajwal finally competed and lost, it wasn’t really about the bow. His coaches helped him see what was actually missing: confidence, patience, stamina. Not talent, application.

He went to work on exactly that. Meditation. Strength training. Daily mental focus, alongside the physical drills. It wasn’t fast. But it was steady, and steady is what actually moves the needle in a sport this precise.

From First Bronze to First Place

In 2023, Prajwal won his first bronze medal, at the district level. He didn’t treat it as a finish line. Medal followed medal. He reached the state level, then stood on that podium twice more, once for gold, once for silver. At the recent DSO tournament, he placed first and qualified to go further. What started as one hard loss had become a steady climb to the top of the podium.

When Talent Meets a Bill It Can’t Pay

Archery rewards precision, and precision doesn’t come cheap. Equipment costs can overwhelm a middle-class family fast, and Prajwal’s was no exception.

For a while, shared academy equipment was enough. But as more students joined and the demand for personal gear grew, that stopped being sustainable and Prajwal’s family didn’t have the means to cover it outright.

His coaches didn’t hesitate. They arranged the equipment for him, and Prajwal’s family repaid it gradually, step by step, as they could. It’s a small transaction on paper. In practice, it was the difference between a talented kid stepping back and a talented kid staying in the game.

More Than a Medal Cabinet

Prajwal’s father has a simple way of describing what changed: his son used to be lazy. Archery made him disciplined, active, focused in ways that clearly reach well past the practice field.

The first medal brought happiness. The state-level wins brought something closer to pride. And for 4 years running now, Prajwal has held that state-level form which is really just discipline, compounding.

A Bigger Story Than One Archer

Prajwal’s path is his own, but he’s training inside something much larger. The Sanjay Hegde Sports Academy currently has 123 students in active training, and more than 800 have passed through in the last 3 years, now competing at district, divisional, state, and even national levels.

Across 10 sports disciplines, the academy counts 14 national-level athletes, 37 state-level achievers, 280 divisional-level winners, and over 550 district-level performers.

Numbers like that are easy to skim past. But every single one of them is a version of Prajwal’s story; a kid who lost first, and kept going anyway.

What Actually Wins

Strip it down, and the formula isn’t complicated: proper training, a safe environment, and mentorship that trusts a student enough to let them fail and try again. Results tend to follow from there.

Prajwal is clear about who got him here — his coach, Rohan Sir; his family; coordinators like Omkar Dada; the academy’s volunteers; and the steady backing of Seva Sahayog Foundation throughout.

Failure gave him direction. Sacrifice gave him strength. Discipline gave him gold.
