A Laptop, a Green Stool, and a Voice Finding Itself

Picture a young girl sitting cross-legged on the floor, notebook open in her lap, a laptop propped on a stool in front of her. On the screen is someone she’s never met in person: a volunteer, thousands of miles away in the United States. She’s nervous. And then she speaks.
That moment, repeated across dozens of homes over the past month, is the real story behind our Global Voices Program.
More Than a Language Class
At Seva Sahayog Foundation, we’ve always believed education isn’t just about what children learn from a textbook, it’s about what they discover they’re capable of. Global Voices was built on that belief.
Students from our Samutkarsh Abhyasika Centres were connected with volunteers from the United States for a series of interactive English conversation sessions. Not lessons in the traditional sense, conversations. The goal was simple to state and hard to achieve: help children speak English with more confidence, think beyond their immediate surroundings, and get comfortable talking to someone who doesn’t look, sound, or live like anyone they know.
Six Sessions, One Visible Shift
The change didn’t happen in a single session. It built, week over week.
In the early sessions, many students hesitated. Searching for words, waiting to be sure before they spoke. By the later ones, that hesitation had started to give way.
Students were asking questions on their own. Following up on what they heard. Staying in the conversation instead of waiting for it to end. The real win wasn’t the vocabulary. It was watching a child who used to think twice before speaking, decide to just speak.
The Person Who Made It Possible
None of this happens on its own. It happens because someone puts in the unglamorous work of coordination, matching volunteers to schedules, keeping sessions running, holding the whole thing together from behind the scenes.
That someone was our volunteer, Neeljaa Bhagat. She brought together a group of committed volunteers from the United States and turned an idea into six weeks of real learning for our students. Her follow-through is the reason this program has a story worth telling at all.
What This Really Proves
Give a child the right exposure, and they’ll surprise you with how far they’re willing to go. Global Voices didn’t hand students confidence, it gave them a reason to find it themselves, one conversation at a time.
We’re proud of what these students showed us, and proud to be part of an organisation that keeps creating these openings for children who deserve every one of them.
